Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War

March 20 @ 4:00 pm 5:30 pm

Join ESU Libraries and Archives for the opening of Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War, a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine, which explores experiences of men whose lives were saved by sacrificing limbs during the war and disabled veterans in the post-war period. The reception will be held on the first floor of ESU’s William Allen White Library. Refreshments will be provided. The event will feature a presentation by Nikki Dean, “Tailor-Made Technology: Insights from the National World War I Museum and Memorial’s Bespoke Bodies: The Design & Craft of Prosthetics Exhibition.” Dean is a military historian and interpreter at the National World War I Museum and Memorial and a retiree from the U.S. Army. Currently, she is a PhD student at the University of Kansas, researching the intersections of the post-WWI treaties of peace on the movement of art objects and collections as war reparations. The National Library of Medicine produced this exhibition and companion website. The exhibit will be on display through April 20, 2024.
