National Tourism Week 2018

National Tourism Week is May 6-10, but so many amazing events are happening in Emporia during that time, we’ve decided to celebrate early! In honor of National Tourism Week, the Emporia Convention & Visitors Bureau presents a series of events showing off some of the best Emporia has to offer.

Tuesday, May 1

The Wild Card Tour
CVB Office
719 Commercial St

Gather a team of up to four people and stop by the CVB office in the Trusler Business Center to pick up your passports. You’ll have Tuesday and Wednesday to visit the five locations on the passport as well as a “wild card” location to be determined by each team. Answer the question on the passport for each location and take a selfie at each location, including your wild card pick. Post the selfie on social media with the CVB hashtag #LoveEmporia and tag the Emporia Convention & Visitors Bureau. Passports must be turned in to the CVB office by 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3! Then join us Thursday evening for a reception where each member of the winning team will receive a $25 Shop Emporia Gift Certificate!

Wednesday, May 2

Trivia Night
Mulready’s Pub

6:00 p.m.

Come test your knowledge at Mulready’s popular trivia night! Emporia CVB is sponsoring tonight’s event, so gather six of the smartest people you know and bring your team to compete. We’ll have snacks to fuel your brain and the winning team receives six gift bags ($10 value)! And of course, since it’s National Tourism Week, you can expect a few Emporia-based trivia questions, so brush up on your local history.

Thursday, May 3

Reception for Wild Card Tour teams
Lyon County History Center

6:00-7:00 p.m.

The Wild Card Tour wraps up with a reception for all participating teams. A random drawing of completed passports determines the “wild card” winning team. Each team member who turns in a completed passport wins a $25 Shop Emporia Gift Certificate! Join us for snacks, laughs, and bragging rights for the winning team.

Friday, May 4

Emporia CVB Presents Twister
Emporia Granada Theatre
807 Commercial St
7:00 p.m.

Get ready to be swept away by this special, interactive screening of tornado disaster flick Twister. This 1996 movie starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt was filmed next door in Oklahoma and features sweeping prairie landscapes, exciting storm chases, and, yes, flying cows. The first 300 ticket purchasers will receive an inflatable cow the night of the movie, and be given a seat on the floor to experience several indoor tornadoes. When the tornado appears in the movie, you will get the full tornado experience inside the theatre as well. Watch out for flying cows! Tickets are $6 for all ages, and are available at the Emporia Granada Theatre Box Office Tue-Fri 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
