1. Make sure your vehicle is capable! Portions of these routes are on low/minimum maintenance roads, meaning the road can be very ROUGH OR ROCKY and some areas have low water crossings.
2. Choose the right tires! Roadways consist of sharp flint rock. Locals will tell you that a 6 ply or more tire would be best suited for the terrain. The common stock street tire would be risky. Depending on the conditions, local tow companies may choose not to come assist or recover your vehicle until conditions improve. Be certain that your tires can withstand the abuse and that your spare is loaded and ready!
3. Fuel up and plan for emergencies! The Flint Hills are remote and you may get into areas without cell phone coverage. Be prepared to handle adversity and let someone know of your intended route and timeline. Have a printed map of your route and/or a GPS device to assist in navigation. Also, don't assume you’ll find a gas station when you most need one.
4. Stay on the road! All routes utilize public roads, however, the land on either side of the side of the road is privately owned. DO NOT LEAVE THE ROADWAY and trespass onto private land. Much of the area is open prairie where there are no fences. Watch out for cattle and other wildlife who may be crossing roadways.
5. Be mindful of the spring burning season. In the springtime (March-May), ranchers perform controlled burns to renew the land. Keep a safe distance from any fire and DO NOT drive into heavy smoke.
6. Bring your own snacks, food and drinks. While some routes may bring you within reach of communities with amenities and supplies, you may go long stretches without any resources.
7. Leave no trace. Make sure that what you bring with you goes out with you. Please help us keep the Flint Hills clean and beautiful by leaving them as you found them.
