Founding City Honors Veterans in Multi-day Celebration

EMPORIA, Kansas, November 2, 2018 – – A multi-day celebration of events in the founding city of Veterans Day, known as the All Veterans Tribute, begins today and runs through November 10. The celebration honors and remembers our military veterans from all wars and conflicts.

The All Veterans Tribute is a collaboration between the Emporia Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) and several local entities who each plan and execute events to educate, honor, remember, celebrate and showcase veterans. The week-long-plus celebration includes events such as panel and roundtable discussions, sporting events, and entertainment then culminates with a parade, memorial service and ham & bean feeds at the local VFW and American Legion on November 10.

Emporia Alvin J. King began a campaign to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day after his nephew was killed in action on December 20, 1944. King wanted a holiday to honor his nephew and all veterans who fought during wartime and served during peacetime. As the founding city of Veterans Day, Emporia held a celebration called “All Veterans Day” a year prior to the first nationwide observance of Veterans Day on November 11, 1954.

The complete schedule for the All Veterans Tribute is posted on the CVB’s Web site.
