If you have been struggling to find the perfect destination for your next family trip, consider visiting the beautiful state of Kansas. Known for its wide open plains and brilliant sunflowers, Kansas tends to be forgotten as a tourist destination. There is much more to do in this state than simply dodging tornadoes, though. Whether you love to sight-see, explore, learn new things, or even enjoy shows, there are a few things that anyone should do during a family vacation in Kansas.

All three suggestions below are near Interstate 35.

  1. Visit Wonderscope (8 minutes from I-35)
Even if your town has its own children museum, Wonderscope in Shawnee, Kansas offers a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. This museum spans across an entire building that used to be an elementary school. The newly-converted museum offers hands-on learning for kids of all ages. Whether you have a 5-year-old who wants to learn about science, a toddler who likes to play dress-up, or a pre-teen who wants to discover how machines work, Wonderscope is the place to be.
  2. See the Louisburg Cider Mill (37 minutes from I-35)
Louisburg, Kansas offers one of the most unique educational attractions. Children and adults alike will love getting to see how apples are harvested and made into cider. The original cider mill is still in place and there are windows around all of the machines. This means that kids can get up close to see how a factory works. When you’re finished exploring, stop by the gift shop to watch fresh donuts being made or to try some out yourself. There are picnic tables on the property so you can even bring a sack lunch to enjoy.
  3. Eat lunch at Casa Ramos (5 minutes from I-35)
Casa Ramos Mexican Restaurant is like no other. Located in Emporia, Kansas, this restaurant offers giant portions of authentic Mexican cuisine. Sit at the bar to enjoy a fresh margarita or enjoy family dining in the restaurant. Kids and large parties are always welcome, especially for birthdays. The entire restaurant is beautifully decorated as a traditional village, with hand-carved tables and chairs and festive paintings.

Remember that no matter when you visit Kansas, it’s important to plan out your trip as much as possible before you leave. This will ensure that you get to see everything you want to no matter how brief your journey might be.
